X marks the spot right HERE: esta (Spanish for 'this one') vs. esa ('that one')
Spanish words 'esta' and 'esa' are easily confused-- remembering that the one with the t (which looks a bit like an x...) is the one that's here, not there, makes them easy to remember.

This mnemonic is used for remembering which verbs take "etre" as an auxiliary. They are almost always used with etre, unless there is a direct object, in which case the auxiliary "avoir" is used.

Ode to Joy
Use the mnemonic as a singsong rhyme, and once learned, it is never forgotten.
To remember the German prepositions that can use BOTH the Accusative and Dative case, depending on whether the object is moving or still/static, use the tune of Schiller's "Ode to Joy" in Beethoven's 9th Symphony, as follows:
an, auf, hinter, in, neben,
ueber, unter, vor, zwischen
All the student has to recall is that these prepositions use BOTH the Dative and Accusative.
