The first letters of the words remind us of the major rivers of the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. (Susquehanna, Patapsco (which forms Baltimore Harbor), Patuxent, Potomac, Rappahannock, Yoik and James.Then we point out major rivers on the Eastern Shore - Elk, Chester, Choptank, Nanticoke, Wicomico and Pocomoke - and ask the students to create a mnemonic for themselves to remember these.

Ok, ignoring all the "E"s, this is a helpful mnemonic for remembering all the states of America. Although it does not give the actual names, is is much easier to know which state you have missed if you know what it starts with. Plus, remember to spell "NUM" with no "B".
