The first letters of the words remind us of the major rivers of the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. (Susquehanna, Patapsco (which forms Baltimore Harbor), Patuxent, Potomac, Rappahannock, Yoik and James.Then we point out major rivers on the Eastern Shore - Elk, Chester, Choptank, Nanticoke, Wicomico and Pocomoke - and ask the students to create a mnemonic for themselves to remember these.

To geographically place the Great Lakes: Lake Superior is the Great Lake farthest west, to the right (east) of Lake Superior is Lake Michigan, then Lake Huron, then Lake Erie and Lake Ontario is the Great Lake farthest to the east.
